MEET CS NAND LAL THAKUR- CHAIRMAN, NOIDA CHAPTER OF THE ICSI
An Associate Member of the Institute Of Company Secretaries Of India and Commerce Graduate, from IGNOU, New Delhi.
CS Nand Lal Thakur is the youngest Chairman of the Noida Chapter of The Institute Of Company Secretaries Of India. At the age of 25, he got the chance to represent the Noida Chapter which includes 7 elected Committee Members, 1000+ CS Members, and 2500+ CS Students belongs to Gautam Buddh Nagar and Bulandshahr Districts.
A firm believer in the sign of quality education and continuous training and skill up-gradation and above all right amount of motivation in the effective and efficient dispensing off of responsibilities by professionals.
Extremely passionate and driven towards the betterment and growth of the professionals, CS Nand Lal has proved his dedication since his days as the Vice Chairman of Noida Chapter of the ICSI in the year 2019. He is a regular speaker in various training programmes of ICSI.
CS Nand Lal Thakur – Chairman at Noida Chapter of the ICSI talks about his achievements, his challenges, his journey from Company Secretary Student to Chairmanship so far in an exclusive interview with CLIQTAX:
CT: Please tell us something about yourself, your experience & journey so far?
NT: I was born and brought up in a very small town of Darbhanga, Bihar where I have done my schooling thereafter, I shifted to Delhi in the Year 2012 for further studies.
As my father is a jeweller and I am the only son of my parents, therefore, they wanted me to run my family business, however, I always wanted to pursue Corporate law where I can get chance to guide and advise the management for carrying out its Business as per the legal norms. Accordingly, I chose Company Secretary-ship Course in the year 2012 and cleared my CS exam in the year, 2016.
I started my corporate life with Aricent Technologies (Now Altron Technologies) as Company Secretary Trainee and thereafter with TCI Developers Limited (A unit of Transport Corporation of India) as Company Secretary & Compliance Officer. In July 2018, I joined Bhilwara Technical Textiles Limited (A unit of LNJ Bhilwara Group) as Company Secretary and Chief Financial Officer, Noida.
I always feel pleasure and honour in serving the society through any means by whatsoever manner therefore I have started thinking to contest CS election to justify my willingness by getting a chance to serve the CS profession.
Fortunately, I contested and won the CS election from Noida Chapter by quota and became one of the seven committee’s members of Noida Chapter for the term 2019-22. The Committee Members are chosen as Vice-Chairperson for the Year 2019 unanimously. At the same time, I started practising Company Secretaryship Profession through my sole proprietorship firm in the name and style of “Nand Lal Thakur & Associates”, Noida.
By the God's grace and with Committee Members support, For the year 2020, I became the youngest Chairperson of Noida Chapter of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India.
CT: As a Chairman of ICSI, what do you think your biggest challenge will be in this position?
NT: As Chairman is such prestigious position which obviously has lots of responsibilities and challenges, however, where you are determined and dedicated towards your passion then challenges will look like opportunities and it gives you courage and strength to deal with it.
As the Noida Chapter is the platinum chapter of ICSI which is ranking at the top position in term of work such as Member's programme, Student's Programmes, tie-ups/Collaboration and other activities for welfare of Stakeholders of the ICSI, therefore, we are receiving praises and support through various means from members and students across India which gives me lots of motivation to face such challenges. In nutshell, I can say, I don’t find any challenge to manage this post at present time.
CT: What are your responsibilities towards the prestigious institute?
NT: Success and development of any Institution are based on the effort, hard work and dedication of the stakeholders of that particular Institution, Accordingly, as chairman, I have more responsibilities towards our mother Institution and to do betterment and development of CS Profession such as Brand Building of ICSI, Create awareness about CS Profession, Make an effort for new recognition for CS Profession, resolve the issues faced by members and students and creating the best image for CS profession in the outer world etc.
I make sure that my every move is making it proud and I am contributing by adding values through utilising the responsibility vested on me.
CT: Can you describe an experience in which you had to manage a crisis?
NT: As this chair is all about management, and what else could be the situation other than this Corona Covid – 19 epidemics to manage ourselves professionally and personally, where everything has changed, initially we thought that we won’t be able to do anything this year but now many milestones have been achieved by Noida Chapter under my 10 months chairmanship:
I. Empanelment with various Hospitals for a discount on medical treatments of members, students, Employees including their dependents:
- Tie-up with Max Hospitals at 14th locations in Northern India
- Tie-up with Metro Hospital, Noida
- Tie-up with Neo Hospital, Greater Noida
- Tie-up with Jaypee Hospital, Greater Noida
- Tie-up with Felix Hospital, Greater Noida
- Tie-up with Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi & Noida
- Tie-up with Kailash Hospitals, Noida and Greater Noida
II. Tie-up with myHQ for arranging co-working space for members of ICSI at a discounted rate up to 40% with no security deposit.
III. Arranged & recommended Headquarter (ICSI) for a tie-up with Poonawalla Finance & Tata Capital for providing loans facilities to CS Members having 1 year of experience at the lowest possible rate. Tie up done with Poonawala Finance by ICSI HQ.
IV. Conducted more than 10 seminars by Mid- March 2020 with wide participation by members. We recorded an attendance of about 200 to 300 members in some seminars.
V. In lockdown, 26 Webinars held as per ICSI guidelines to update the CS members with new changes and upgrade their knowledge. We have also conducted various Students programmes including Virtual Career Awareness Programme (CAP) along with Online Executive/Professional Development Program (EDP/PDPs).
VI. Conducted Volunteer’s meet in the month of February to request all members of Noida Chapter who are willing to participate in various activities of the Noida Chapter. We have also started monthly e-newsletter of Noida Chapter.
VII. Conducted a Campus Placement Drive for Jobs and training for CS Members & Students respectively and few members and students got placed, along with the launch of 1st Corporate Membership Scheme of Noida Chapter for the year 2020-21 to ease in attending a seminar/programme of Noida Chapter.
VIII. 1st Corporate Drive to reconnect with senior members of Noida Chapter to help and guide in various activities of Noida Chapter.
IX. Conducted Virtual Tuition Classes for CS students in the period of lockdown through Skype.
X. Celebrating the month of July as Students Month and planned to conduct and celebrate more than ten (10) activities during this month, starting with Online Quiz Contest, conducted on 3rd July 2020.
- A Webinar on Life Skills was conducted on 9th July 2020.
- Online Faculty Induction Program was conducted on 10th July 2020.
- Online Revision Classes conducted from 16th to 20th July 2020 covering topics from exam perspective.
- Samadhan Diwas celebrated on 18th July 2020.
- Essay Competition was conducted on 26th July 2020.
- A Webinar on “How to Appear in an Interview” was conducted on 27th July 2020.
- PPT competition was conducted, where PPTs were invited from Students.
- 1st Online MSOP and 1st online EDP are being conducted by Noida Chapter which has been attended by 100+ Students across India.
XI. Online Teachers’ Conference was organised on Tuesday, 8th September 2020 to Observe Teachers’ Week and;
XII. As a Social worker, helped society at large when it was in need of food and medicines during COVID pandemic.
Fortunately, with the existence of internet and networking, the situation has been converted into the opportunity and Noida Chapter has created history as we could be able to conduct maximum activities never happened in past. Since, being challenged in life is inevitable but being defeated is optional.
Some of the highlights, I would like to share that this year we could be able to invite Guests and faculties such as CS Radha Kishan Sharma IPS, SPl. Dir. & Addl. Dir. General of Police, Intelligence, Odisha, BBSR, CS Sonal Goes IAS, Smt. Ritu Maheshwari IAS, CEO – Noida Authority, CS Gauri Shankar Gupta IFS, CS I K Elesela IPS, CS Jaideep Govind IAS, Secretary-General – NHRC, GOI, Shri Onkar Sharma, Add. Chief Labour Commissioner, Shri Anupam Mallik, Former Labour Commissioner – Haryana, Many Assistant ROCs, all past Presidents of the ICSI (Northern Region) and many other senior and respectful guests. It was also a great honour and pleasure for me in sharing dais and screen with such respected guests.
CT: What are you doing on a daily basis to build into other leaders?
NT: Since I am a very keen learner and keep on exploring myself and for this, what else could be better than media platform. I regularly go through the newspapers and journals to get updated with the market. I also try to read as much as possible.
CT: What are the challenges you have faced so far and how did you overcome them?
NT: Challenges brings opportunity as well as threats and I have decided to focus on opportunities. Moreover, I admire challenges because only they can bring out the best outcome.
My journey in this profession and chairmanship has been wonderful because with the team of dedicated and steadfast members all the things go smooth. Moreover networking and media platforms have succoured a lot.
CT: Can you describe a time when you have had to deliver negative feedback?
NT: There's nothing ultimate negative in this big universe, there's always a positive in every negative, this has been my core mantra. Negative is just a state of mind because situations are the same only approach changes and that matters. Moreover, feedbacks should always be supported by appropriate remedial actions.
CT: Share an experience you had in dealing with a difficult person and how you handled the situation?
NT: The profession is all about service and people, and since I have always been a people's man and intensely want to serve the society it becomes a go-to for me. Although every person and their approach can be different your ethics, integrity, perseverance and calmness never go waste so keep them ready.
CT: If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
NT: For someone who has just chosen this respectful and leadership profession, my suggestions would be to start loving your subjects and develop a habit of reading from books (original sources) and always keep yourself updated with the amendments. Learning is a lifelong process my dear friends so keep learning, keep enjoying. At last, just do everything with passion.
Apart from this, I have one request to all those young Company Secretaries, to do some good work for CS profession, by developing your skill and groom your overall personality in such way that it can create value addition into you and it will also automatically create value to the CS Profession and Brand the ICSI.
Most importantly, follow the motto of our Institute “Satyam Vada Dharma Chara” in true letter and spirit i.e. “Speak the Truth and Abide by Law”.
CT: At last, a few words you want to say about CLIQTAX and your experience about it?
