Due to Covid-19 pandemic, Companies are inventing new ways to reach to their customers and to sustain in this difficult time.


Kotak Mahindra Bank has recently introduced a video KYC facility for its customers to open saving fund account on its digital banking platform-Kotak 811. This becomes a first of its kind in banking services.

This has been introduced to ensure zero contact while opening savings account. The bank has launched this video KYC facility on a pilot basis. After a successful result, the bank is planning to extend this service to banks other related products in a phasic manner. 

In January 2020, the Reserve Bank of India had amended the existing Know Your Customer norms and launched a video based KYC option for the purpose of customer’s verification. Kotak 811 becomes the first bank which integrated this service into a process of savings account opening.

Earlier a customer had to visit the branch with relevant documents such as PAN card, Aadhar card, a valid address proof for the KYC purpose but after introduction of video KYC, the verification of these mentioned documents will be completed through a video call with the bank representative ensuring zero physical contact.

This video KYC is surely going to be a game changer as it will verify customer details from the comfort of customer’s home/office without the need of him being present in person.

As per Shanti Ekambaram, Group President – Consumer Banking, Kotak Mahindra Bank , “In the new normal world that we must now adapt to in the aftermath of COVID-19, Kotak’s priority on digital-first initiatives takes on even more meaning. In this condition, Video KYC can prove to be a game changer where customer verification is completed from the comfort of one’s home or office without the need for a physical interaction.”

In 2017, Kotak 811 was launched, a first-of-its-kind full-service, through which savings account can be opened on the go anywhere in India. The introduction of Video KYC promises to change the experience of opening a bank account for all its customers. This is a secure process, which is convenient and it saves time and gives customers a full-fledged savings account with no restrictions or limits on the usage of the account.

How the Video KYC will work?

The customer has to visit the bank’s website i.e www.kotak.com to open a Kotak 811 savings account

  1. At first they have to enter name, mobile number and email id
  2. After that they have to give consent to use their Aadhaar number to open the account
  3. Now they have to mention PAN, Aadhaar numbers and communication address
  4. Then they to give access to phone’s/laptop location for conducting Video KYC
  5. Bank executive will then commence Video KYC
  6. After the successful video KYC, Customer Relationship Number (CRN) and Account Number are generated.
  7. Finally Kotak 811 savings account is opened shortly thereafter

Note : As per the guidelines issued by the regulatory authority, only Indian citizens are eligible for Video KYC. The entire process of video KYC will be recorded and stored by the bank. It is currently available only for new Kotak customers.  


We hope to see this service of Video KYC to be adopted by various other banks in upcoming days as it will  save them from having a physical contact by visiting the bank. This is efficient and a helpful service.
