RIL PLANS TO BRING KIRANAS CLOSER TO YOU
Amidst the Reliance-Facebook deal which is a commercial partnership between Reliance retail and WhatsApp to push out what it calls new commerce, which allows customers to order their needs in the neighborhood kiranas. This online to offline (O2O) would potentially change the nature of retail, given WhatsApp's reach of 400 million customers in India.
Reliance Industries Limited Chairman Mukesh Ambani said nearly 3 crore Kirana stores soon will be able to digitally transact with the nearby customers through JioMart- A new commerce platform which is already launched in Navi Mumbai and Thane.
The orders are expected to be placed through WhatsApp, while Reliance had already started ropping the kiranas in its network by offering merchandise, digital payment solutions including Point of sales (PoS) machines. This idea is to make high-quality front end-use of Whatsapp and Jio's feet on the street execution.
Besides tie-ups with kiranas, Reliance has 11,316 stores across consumer and electronics, fashion and lifestyle, and grocery. The development comes when the customers decide to order online amidst the COVID 19 outbreak. “The opportunity is immense but the execution at a small store is crucial. The demand pattern is different and stocking in the right location is a challenge. This would impact the timely delivery of day to day products” said the e-commerce executive working on this model.
All said, “The final interface of Jiomart and WhatsApp would play a huge differentiator as customers are used to user-friendly Whatsapp and to bring the customers the chat-based commerce” he added.
