English is an essential global language and learning it, opens doors of opportunities in all walks of life.

Enguru English learning app is a self-learning app, founded by Arshan Vakil and Udit Hinduja in 2014, that aims to train the users by providing access to high quality of English coaching.

Although the majority of the urban population goes to English medium school, they often face a struggle to match up with their peer, classmates after graduation. And conditions in rural and semi-urban areas are even more grave. 

Even the professionals in industry and corporates are looking up to the need of English proficiency and business communication. To resolve the issue, Enguru has introduced courses specific to different domains in over 12 different vernacular languages and it is nothing class dodgy coaching class as the app is focused on speaking through AI enabled simulated conversation that teaches the users right from the basics to more complex conversations as he moves forward.

For specific domains like to get gig economic jobs in sectors like consumer services and retail market, the module of the courses is prepared in a way to offer basic knowledge about everything-communication, presentation, negotiation and interpersonal skills.

At the time of signing up, it is imperative for the user to go through a placement test that helps the user identify his starting point. The test consists of questions related to general and English proficiency. Once the test is done, the AI induced app splits the course into 10 minutes of short videos each consisting of a lesson and a conversation or comprehension followed by a test.

The module comprises a variety of questions in format of image, text, audio with adaptive and interaction algorithms that help the user improve his performance according to the career preference. The conversations used are real and workplace specific scenarios so that the user can relate to it.

The interactive live learning sessions are conducted by connecting students across the country with Cambridge qualified English Professionals. Moreover, the company also partners with various institutes across India to upscale the skills of their staff and students, this is done via another app called as Enguru for enterprises. It provides a facility like a dashboard access that helps in tracking and monitoring the user’s progress and to make customized programs or sessions based on the user's preference such as organizational needs.

USP of Enguru: What differentiate the Enguru from other online learning apps like Hello English, HinKhoj etc. is that it primarily focuses on employability by giving industry specific content.

Target Market

The core target of Enguru is on young adults between the age group of 15 to 34 that in whole makes up to 75 percent of internet users in India. As per report of 2021, the scope of Indian market will be increased by more than double as of now, the non-English speaker accounts for 250 million and it is expected to reach 550 million by the next year.

The Enguru has targeted the market segment in two parts:

The first segment is the primary target i.e. young adults studying in colleges, recent graduates who are seeking jobs and working professionals who are trying to upscale their current skills to work in more competitive environments like in the fields of retail, automotive, hospitality etc.

The other segment targets the general english learners especially women for example from rural and semi urban areas, housewives and who are seeking a way to create job opportunities.

How it all started?

Akshay who is currently the CEO and Udit, is COO of Enguru were roommates at the University of Pennsylvania. Arshan holds a degree in System Engineering and has worked as a Product Manager that inclined him towards product engineering, he prepared the product road map of Enguru with the help of data driven decisions and digital marketing.

Udit has a strong sense of delivering premium services to the clients as he worked 3.5 years in KPMG. He graduated with a B.A. in Economics and Politics from New York University in 2012. As the COO, he focuses on building client partnership, where he oversees the entire B2B vertical from sales to operations. 

One of the major challenges Enguru is facing is to engage the users on the app. Despite 30 million downloads, users are not spending as much time as expected, to increase the engagement, they keep reiterating the app.

Enguru has raised funding worth $ 2.5 million in September 2017 and the main investors were Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, Village Capital, Weihua Yan. 

Mr. Weihua Yan is one of the board of directors at Enguru. He is Chinese-American investor who co-founded Diapers.com which was later acquired by Amazon.com.

Enguru has it headquarter in Bengaluru and offices in Mumbai and Delhi. The company has worked with over 150 organizations across India and has clients from top notch firms such as Trent, Godrej Nature’s Basket, Oberoi Hotels, Magic Bus India Foundation etc.

The company accounted for the revenue of Rs. 2 crores in the financial year 2018-19.
