Deep Analysis Of YouTube’s Content Generation

Nowadays, YouTube has become a big source of watching content related to different things and influencing people. There are various types of videos that we get to see in our daily lives. The Vice-President of Engineering at YouTube Mr Cristos Goodrow provided information related to the content generation of YouTube which we are going to consider elaborately.

The main emphasis is on the sensationalist & misleading content which YouTube says the “Borderline Content”. According to him, the management is continuously trying to not recommend these types of content in the public domain.

Analysing The Recommendation System Of YouTube

If we talk about YouTube’s recommendation system then it works in two main places one is the homepage of YouTube. As we know that the homepage has a mix of content that comes from the subscribed channels or the list of recommended videos. Now the next is the “Up Next” panel is basically when a person is done with watching a video then YouTube shows the second video to the person related to that.

Signals Used By You tube’s Recommendation System

There are various things which include in the term “Signals” as it can range from the clicks, watch time of the video, various surveys, and the action of people around the video such as sharing the videos or several others.

If a person clicks on the video this is regarded as a strong indicator. But according to the research performed by YouTube’s management, just a single click doesn’t provide a perception of the video.

Watch Time

It is basically that a person watches the video for how long to give “personalized signals” to the YouTube system. For example, if a person loves to watch comedy content then they will watch the comedy-related videos for long hours. It provides a perception of the people of top YouTube’s management.

Survey Response

Surveys generally include several direct questions to the users. Generally asking the people to rate the videos out of the five-star points.

Sharing, Likes & Dislikes

Like, shares, dislikes also play a major role in providing a view of the content. Generally, as we know that the basic assumption is that if the person like the content then the video gets more likes and in the same case if they dislike it the video will not go high up.

How Does YouTube Ensure That Misinformation Does Not Get Recommended?

These days all the social media platforms are dealing with allegations that they are not able to stop the circulation of misinformation or misleading content. According to Joe Biden,” Facebook & YouTube are not able to reduce the misinformation related to COVID 19 vaccines”

  • According to YouTube’s Management” We don’t want to recommend any low-quality or the borderline content. For example, those videos which are claiming that earth is flat or Cancer can be cured by natural remedies.
  • According to YouTube, it has limited the recommendation of Low-Quality content since 2011. It has built the system of “Classifiers for the identification of violent videos “IN 2015 it has started a new feature known as “sensationalistic tabloids content “
  • The classification system of YouTube where the video in the news & the information category gets tagged. These are performed by evaluators who hail from various corners of the world who are trained to set up the publicly rated guidelines. They rely on certified experts such as medical doctors where the content provides specific medical information.

Engagement Of Borderline Content

According to YouTube, they said that through surveys and other sources they find that “Most of the viewers do not want to see the borderline content”. The company also said that there is less availability of such type of content on YouTube. They also emphasized that when they started to curb the Borderline content in 2019 they saw a 70% decrease in the watch time.

They claim that the consumption of the borderline content that comes from the recommendation of YouTube is less than 1%. YouTube is continuously taking steps to demote these types of content at much below level.

Why YouTube Does Not Remove The Misleading Content?

YouTube said that the “Borderline” content is not good for the image of the company in the Media, public & Policymakers. But YouTube doesn’t remove this type of content like Facebook as they said:” Misinformation gets shifted and evolve rapidly”. They also said, “Disinformation can vary hang on the background of the person or various other factors”.

Wrapping Up

Undoubtedly, YouTube is a one-stop solution for watching videos. People are connected through this network from around the world. These days the emphasis is on the “Misinformation” or the “Borderline” content gets aggravated due to the rapid transmission of information on these platforms. Misinformation & Rumours can lead to severe results and the Social Media platforms must take cognizance of the initiation of content.
